Catch A Glimpse Of Putney, SW15

Putney is one of the districts of south-west London, part of the London Borough of Wandsworth. Putney is among the 35 major Greater London centres, identified in the London Plan.

Historically, Putney was part of Surrey, as a hundred within Brixton till 1889, when it was included in Greater London. Earlier that century, Putney became the focus of civil engineering. For this purpose, the College for Civil Engineers was relocated to the area in 1840.

The area features Putney Heath, which has played a significant role in historic events. It was regarded as the place for duels, with many of them undertaken exactly here in the past. There is a grade II listed building within the heath - an obelisk of brick and stone to mark 110 years of the Great Fire of London.

Since the 19th century, Putney has established solid traditions in rowing, becoming one of the most notable centres for this sport in the country. Over 20 rowing clubs are now present at Putney Embankment on the River Thames. University Stone, close to Putney Bridge, has been the starting point of the University Boat Race, held every year since 1856.

Mainline trains serve the area from Putney Station to Waterloo Station. There is also a London Underground service available from East Putney. In addition to these services, there are also multiple bus routes that pass through the area.
