The district of Tooting is located within the London Borough of Wandsworth, in south West London. The area is situated 8 kilometres southwest of Charing Cross.

The history of Tooting dates as far back as pre-Saxon period. There was a Roman Road, which was later renamed Stane Street passing through the area to link London with Chichester. The High Street of the area is on this same road. The areas of Streatham and Tooting were both given at one time to the Abbey of Chertsey.

Totting was mostly developed in the Victorian era, as well as the Edwardian period. Growth also occurred in the 20th century. At that time the Tooting Library was built. It originally included one storey, with a second one added in 1906. St Benedict’s Hospital was established in 1930 by the capital County Council.

Totting Commons is a large open area at the northern part of the district. In the past, this was Tooting Bec Common (formerly part of the parish of Streatham) and Tooting Graveney Common. The park is home to Tooting Bec Lido. It is the second largest open-air swimming pool in the UK, opened in 1906.

Tooting features two indoor markets, the entrances to which are just metres apart on High Street - Tooting Market and Broadway Market, which ranks among London’s largest indoor markets.
