Walk Around The Interesting Area Of Colliers Wood, SW19

Colliers Wood is a southern London area, part of the London Borough of Merton. It is located in the SW19 postcode district, which is shared with neighbouring Wimbledon.

The area is named after a wood that was located east of High Street. The wood was cleared in the mid 1890s to open space for development. The Merton Priory is a notable historic landmark, which is considered as a World Heritage status candidate.

Colliers Wood is predominantly residential. However, there is a busy high street that splits down the area, in addition to two shopping venues: Priory Retail Park and Tandem Centre. The site of old print works has been occupied by a supermarket since 1989.

There are three parks within Colliers Wood. Wandle Meadow Nature Park is a small and informal one. Wandle Park occupies an area of 11 acres and is owned by the National Trust. There is also a recreation ground that completes the parks scene of the area.

Colliers Wood features the building of Colliers Wood Tower, regarded as one of the ugliest buildings within the capital. It was originally called the ‘Lyon Tower’ and occupied by the Ronald Lyon Holdings company. It is currently undergoing improvement and renovation. The main goal is to introduce 150 rentable apartments and a number of commercial units on ground floor level.
