Enter The District Of Wandsworth, SW8

The district of Wandsworth is situated within the London Borough of Wandsworth. The area is situated 4.6 miles southwest of Charing Cross. It is one of the 35 Greater London major centres, as identified in the London Plan.

One of the notable historical buildings of the area is Young&Co’s Ram Brewery, which has produced traditional draught drinks since 1581. This makes it among the oldest sites in the country to continuously produce beer. The business stopped in 2006 when Charles Wells of Bedford company was merged with this one, but brewing in small amounts is still taking place.

The area features Wandsworth Museum, currently located on the former site of the Victorian library on West Hill. Some Victorian artwork can be observed in the De Morgan Centre within the museum.

One of the notable areas of Wandsworth is that of Old York Road/the Tonsleys. Its name is derived from many of the streets that have ‘Tonsley’ in them. The area has an old village feel, enhanced by shops and cafes at its centre. Three popular pubs mark the notable landmarks here: East Hill, the Alma and the Royal Standard.

Another notable landmark within Wandsworth is category B Wandsworth men’s prison. This is the largest institution of this kind in London, and among the largest in Europe.
